Happy Birthday, Kiya!
"Dude, you're doing it wrong," Emmett spoke as I attempted to master the art of using Rosalie's new video camera. "You take off the lens cap and then press the power button. For someone who's brainwaves outweigh his sparkle capacity, you sure don't fully have the grasp of modern technology."
Alice giggled from Jasper's arms as they sat together on a love seat by the window. The day was unusually warm and due to the sun being out, school was not an option. Esme and Rosalie had chosen today to take a shopping trip to Seattle. The one time I would ever need Rosalie's assistance and she is not here to gloat whilst offering it.
"Ha!" I proclaimed triumphantly as the lens cap popped off. I thrust the camera in Emmett's face childishly as I pressed the power button, seeing his face appear on the small screen.
"How old are you, Edward? Thirteen?" Jasper sighed, exasperated. His mild annoyance amused me as I mastered the video camera. It still amazed me how something so small could hold so much. "It's just a video."
"Now, now. This is very important to Edward," Alice protested, her smile impish. "You know he has a crush on Kiya."
My head snapped in Alice's direction as she sent out a silent sorry in my mind. I scoffed under my breath. Her revelation had been more than intentional.
"Kiya, eh?" Emmett grinned. "I know her. Isn't she still pissed at you because you spied on her?"
"Her radiant beauty caught me off guard! How was I supposed to know she knew I was there?!" I shouted, my mortification washing over me like freezing cold water.
"He wasn't spying, Emmett. He was playing peeping Tom. There is a difference," Jasper insisted. "He had a good old grope of himself while her back was turned. It was a good job Alice warned her that he was going to be there."
I groaned. Emmett snatched the camera away and pointed it at his face. He made a series of lewd motions, letting the camera follow his every move. He finished with a surprisingly nice - for Emmett - birthday message, with maximum sexual innuendo. Emmett turned the camera on Jasper and Alice.
Alice grinned as she spoke. "Happy Birthday, dearest Kiya. Did you honestly think you could hide your birthday from us, bitch fucker? I always know, silly." She tapped her temple and turned towards Jasper who relayed a simple and polite birthday message. Emmett then turned the camera back on himself.
"Now, I apologize for the emofest you're about to experience. If you need a little happy time, there's a party in my pants and you have the only invite." He finished with a wink.
I glared at him and took the camera from him and escaped to my room. I began to pace a little, walking back and forth in front of my window. My fingers threaded through my hair, tugging at the bronze strands as I went over my birthday speech in my mind.
"Man up!" I heard Alice call from the floor below. I cringed as two masculine laughs followed. I slammed my door, the frame creaking from the force I had exerted. I set the camera up on the small tripod, and pressed record. I took a seat in front of it, nervousness overtaking me.
"Hello Kiya, I'm Edward Cullen- well, of course you know that. I just wanted to say Happy Birthday...and to apologize once again for the window incident. I know you've taken to calling me Window-Ward and I understand the comical insinuation," I paused, wondering what to say. "In my defense, your beauty struck me uncharacteristically dumb. Seeing you standing there in nothing but your pee paw sweater, French Knickers and ugg boots was a site to behold."
I brought my fingers to my mouth, contemplating if there was anyway I could embarrass myself anymore. Frustration pounded behind my eyes as I envisioned myself at her feet begging her to talk to me. I had no option but to end this horribly awkward moment.
"Anyway, again, Happy Birthday, Kiya. To quote Les Miserable: Whether true or false, what is said about men often has as much influence on their lives, and particularly on their destinies, as what they do. If Window-Ward is what I am to be known as, then it is who I shall be. I shall forever be waiting for another glimpse of your ugg boots and pee paw sweater. I am your personal, devoted window stalker."
I got up from my chair and pressed the stop button on the video camera. I sighed and placed it on my desk where I knew Alice would take it from later to be processed. I pressed the play button on my iPod and basked in the familiar sounds of my favorite eighties music. I was going to win her over one day. I couldn't fight this feeling anymore.
